Opening Sequence
It was a pleasure to be asked to create the opening sequence for Michael Morpurgos’ “Mimi and the Mountain Dragon”.
Factory supplied me with 13 beautifully illustrated images by Amy Lewis for the opening storyline, which came to me as layered high resolution files.
My challenge was to set up each image as a 3D file, which was layered to give a 2.5D look and feel. Additional geometry was created to map the floor plus other elements that would benefit from a true 3D treatment. Layered elements were animated in a subtle way to give another level of movement. Finally, VFX Snow was generated using snowflakes created by the original illustrator.
I then continued the 2.5D/3D treatment in the first four animated shots, as a way of establishing the locations of key characters in the village.
The second part of the brief was to contain the completed animations within a fairy tail style book. I generated this within Cinema 4D using a basic book rig, which allowed me to put some thought into the way each page turned. Vin art directed the logo and gave guidance on how he felt the should look.
